Fruit is a ripened ovary of the seed bearing plant. The main function of
the fruit is dispersal or dissemination of the seeds. However the fruits are
commercially valuable as human food. It is also widely used for preparation
of various medicines. Few of the plants that are traditionally cultivated
for their valuable fruits are:
Artocarpus Heterophyllus
Common Name: Jack Fruit
Uses: The young fruits of the Artocarpus Heterophyllus plant are acrid, astringent and
carminative. While the ripe fruits are sweet, cooling, laxative and
aphrodisiac.
Asteracantha Longifolia
Common Name:Kulikhara, Kokilaksah, Long

Uses: The fruits of the plant are useful in inflammations,
hyperdipsia, strangury, jaundice and vesicle calculi. It is also used in
flatulence and dysentery.
Azadirachta Indica

debility.
Convolvulus Alsinoides
Common Name:Dwarf Morning glory,
Shankhpushpi, Shankhahuli
Uses: The fruit of the plant has the rare property of having
greatest therapeutic value when unripe. It is traditionally used for the
treatment of diarrhea, non-specific colitis, malabsorption syndrome,
gastritis, and adult onset diabetes (as ancillary therapy).
Gums are polysaccherides of natural origin. They can be easily dissolved or
dispersed in water to give a thickening and gelling effect. Gums are widely
used in food industry as thickening agents, gelling agents, emulsifiers and
stabilizers.
Resin is usually yellow brownish secretion obtained from different parts of
the plant. It mainly comprises of volatile tarpenes, along with essential
oils and gums in little amount. The resins are insoluble in water and
soluble in alcohol.
Boswellia Serrata
Common Name: Indian Olibanum Tree, Olibanum,

Uses: Boswellia Serrata Gum resin obtained from the plant is antiseptic,
expectorant, anti-inflammatory and diuretic in nature. It is helpful in the

Guggul
Common Name: Commiphora, Mukul, Guggul,
Balsamodendrom Mukul, Indian Bdellium Tree, Moql, Moqle-arzagi.
Uses: The Guggul resin is known to increase white blood cell counts
and possess strong disinfecting properties. It has been known to lower
cholesterol and triglycerides, while maintaining or improving the HDL to LDL
ratio. It is also helpful in providing protection against ailments such as
common cold, and various skin, dental and ophthalmic infections.
Pinus Roxburghii
Common Name: Chir Pine, Three Leaved Pine,
Himalayan Long Leaved Pine.
Uses: The turpentine obtained from the resin of the tree is
antiseptic, diuretic, rubefacient and vermifuge. It is useful in cough,
cold, asthma, chronic bronchitis, inflammations, liver and spleen diseases,
kidney and bladder infections, gonorrhea, scurvy, epilepsy, hemorrhoids and
tuberculosis.
