Organic farming is the proven method of agriculture
practiced through centuries. This system relies on ecosystem and frees the
land of its dependency on the external synthetic inputs to retain its
productivity. It is a system that begins to consider potential environmental
and social impacts by eliminating the use of synthetic inputs, such as
synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, genetically modified seeds and breeds,
preservatives, additives and irradiation.
Advantages of organic farming are widespread covering
every aspect of agriculture. To name a few its major advantages include the
following:
- Chemical free soil
- Improved bio diversity
- Retention of soil fertility
- Employment generation at the local level
- Environment friendliness · High nutrition value
- No side effects
- Low energy inputs
- High premium value in the global market
- Leads to diversification of farm activity
Even the studies, conducted from time to time, have made it aptly clear
that organic farming is the only way to achieve sustainability at the
grassroots. Studies have also indicated the environmental benefits of
growing food organically. It can improve biodiversity, protect wildlife
habitats and prevent the toxicity in three essential life supporting
elements; water, air and soil.
Research also indicates that the soil building process in organic farming
stores significantly higher levels of carbon dioxide, thus providing a way
to help reduce global warming.
